Course length

Each course is 10 weeks long. New lessons are released weekly, and material remains available until the course closes. Expect to spend 3-6 hours per course per week.

Course cost

US$800 for an individual course
US$1000 for a two-course bundle ($500 per course)
US$1425 for a three-course bundle ($475 per course)
US$1800 for a four-course bundle ($450 per course)
US$2125 for all five HMX Fundamentals courses ($425 per course)

Individual Courses


Learn foundational concepts in physiology and see how the material is used in taking care of patients. This course focuses on principles that are important for understanding multiple organ systems and covers Partial Pressure, Movement of Body Fluids, Flow Through Tubes, Compliance, Supply and Demand, Transmural Pressure, Dynamic and Steady State Conditions, Acid–Base, Homeostasis, and Exercise – Integration.

A solid understanding of physiology is important to practicing medicine, and this course brings an added dimension even if you are already taking a standard physiology or combined anatomy & physiology course.

Learn foundational concepts in immunology and gain a basis for understanding a broad range of medical conditions. This course focuses on principles important for understanding innate and adaptive immunological responses. Lessons include an Overview of Immunology and the Immune System, Innate Immunity and Inflammation, Microbial Recognition and Responses, Antibodies – Structure and Function, Lymphocyte Development and Diversity, T Cell Activation by Antigens, T Cell-Dependent B Cell Responses, Helper and Cytotoxic T Cells, Failures of the Immune System, and Novel Immune Therapies.

A solid understanding of immunology is becoming increasingly important in medicine, as more therapies target the immune system and more diseases are known to have an immunologic basis.

Learn foundational concepts in genetics and gain new insight into the rapidly evolving field of genomics. This course spans the field from basic to advanced genetics. Lessons include an Overview of Genetics, The Central Dogma and Genetic Variation, Mendelian Inheritance of Disease, Identifying Mendelian Disease Genes, Chromosomal Aberrations, The Genetics of Cancer, Common Complex Traits, Human Population Genetics, Beyond the Genome Sequence, and Genetics and Precision Medicine.

Most conditions have some genetic basis, and a scientific revolution enabled by genomic technologies is changing the way that many diseases are diagnosed and treated as well as providing insight into health, risk factors, and disease prevention. A solid understanding of genetics has never been more important for the practice of medicine.

This course focuses on the foundational principles and themes in biochemistry, spanning from the molecular up to the whole organism. Lessons include an Overview of Biochemistry, The Rules of Energy, How Energy is Harnessed, How Energy is Transformed, How Cells Compartmentalize, How Cells Specialize, How Cells Communicate, and The Chemistry of Life.

Learn foundational concepts in pharmacology and gain a basis for understanding how drugs and therapeutics are used in the treatment and prevention of diseases and disorders. This course focuses on the foundational concepts of pharmacology and lessons include an Overview of Pharmacology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Pharmacokinetics – Part 1, Pharmacokinetics – Part 2, Targets for Drug Action, Pharmacodynamics, Drug Toxicity, and Drug Discovery and Development.

A solid understanding of pharmacological principles is essential for the practice of medicine, in order to effectively treat patients whether it be with traditional small molecule drugs or newer advanced therapeutics that use novel approaches and methods to target a disease or disorder.

Course Bundles

You can create the bundle that is right for you by selecting which courses you want to take when you apply. While it is possible to take any bundle of concurrent courses, suggested possibilities include the following combinations. Note: Courses in a bundle must all be completed during the same course period.

Five-course or any four-course bundle

For those who are committed to seriously preparing for programs (for example, medical, nursing, PA, etc.), taking four courses or all five courses represents the best overall value. If you follow this route, please plan to set aside several hours per day to get the most out of the courses.

Three-course bundles

  • Immunology, Genetics, and Biochemistry – If you are interested in learning Genetics and Immunology, but don’t feel fully confident in your knowledge of the molecular and metabolic foundations of health and disease, take this bundle.
  • Physiology, Pharmacology, and Biochemistry – Take these three courses to understand the physiological basis of various diseases as well as the basis of their pharmacological treatment. Knowledge of biochemistry will give you deeper grounding for what you learn in Pharmacology.

Two-course bundles

  • Immunology and Genetics – Advances in genetics and immunology are leading to an improved understanding of disease, and translating into better diagnostics and treatments. With this course bundle, you will gain an understanding of these rapidly evolving fields and how they relate to the practice of medicine.
  • Physiology and Biochemistry – Most disease processes have a physiological and a molecular basis. With this course bundle, you will gain an understanding of processes at an organ system level and tie this knowledge to an understanding of molecular and metabolic foundations.
  • Physiology and Pharmacology – Select this bundle to understand the basis of many conditions at an organ system level as well as the pharmacological principles underlying treatment.
