Immunology, Physiology

Selen Çokgör has been a veterinarian in Istanbul, Turkey since 2015. Though her practice focuses on pets, horses, and exotic animals, she regularly spends time learning about advances in human treatments and their applicability to her own work. She took HMX Immunology and Physiology to further her knowledge and improve her ability to communicate with the families of her patients.

I got a lot of information, especially in immunology, because we have trouble with dermatological problems with our patients, like ectopic dermatitis. I now understand about inflammatory mediators and cytokines and other things very clearly.

The most important thing in the courses for me was the [clinical] cases; they are very good. I got a lot of information from the physical exams and the cases.

The videos and presentations were well done. I’m so happy, and so thankful, especially for the physiology professor [Dr. Richard Schwartzstein]. It was a pleasure taking the courses.

I believe about 90 percent was similar [to veterinary study], the only differences depending on the animal types.

I’m always trying to read new articles, because science is changing fast and we should be fast. So I was so happy when the professors and the doctors [in the HMX course] explained the new treatments. This is very useful for me; I’m using it right now for my patients. Now I understand in your country how you apply this diagnostic, and this is beautiful information.

Yes, I will recommend to my friends and colleagues. I’m interested in stem cell therapies in animals, applying them intravenously for removing inflammation. I believe, if I take the other courses, it will be helpful to me and my team. We have both veterinarians and human doctors too, and I will recommend to all of them because I’m so happy about [the experience].
