In all the science courses she’s taken so far, Lu Chen has recognized that she learns most effectively when she can use images and videos to make difficult concepts clear. The visual focus of HMX courses appealed to her as an opportunity to complement her coursework as a nutritional sciences major in the pre-dental track at Boston University. Chen explains what she found most useful about the course material and how she plans to apply it in the future.

I was taking physiology at school while I was taking HMX Physiology. They worked together well; what I really liked was the application of physiology in the hospital. That really helped me understand the concepts, oh this is how it is used in reality. In school we don’t really have that [clinical application].

I do have some cell biology background so that helped me understand the concepts in immunology.

The videos were really helpful and also the quizzes – the questions helped me really think about the concepts that I learned and applying them to the questions. I also used the quizzes from HMX to prepare me for the exams in school, so that was really helpful.

In each course, there would be a scenario about the concept – for example, if you have high-salt food, you will get swollen or get high blood pressure, I think it’s interesting to really think about how things happen to the body using the concepts from physiology. I think that’s really unique. In immunology, the disease linkage application was really interesting.

Yes, I would recommend them to people who are interested in these topics, and want to learn about how they are applied in reality.

I do want to have a career in health care, and if I get into dental school, these concepts are definitely going to help me in my future education.
