HMX Course

Physiology

As she made her way through the medical school application process, Supakan Apiratanapimonchai considered several options to continue building her knowledge and her resume. “I didn’t know if I was going to get accepted or if I’d have to take the MCAT one more time and reapply,” she says. Supakan explains why HMX Physiology was the “perfect choice” to help prepare her for med school – which she’ll soon be attending at the American University of Antigua.

How much physiology knowledge did you have before taking this course?

I actually took my introduction to physiology in my undergrad years [at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg]. I took it last semester of my senior year , so it’s actually pretty new and fresh. This course goes more in-depth than what I learned as an undergrad. With HMX I get to learn more, like how to calculate partial pressure and stuff like that. So it’s helped me to understand it so much more.

Did you find it challenging?

It really depends on which lesson – some lessons are very new to me, and some I have already learned about it in my undergrad. For example, homeostasis, I’m pretty familiar with that concept, so it wasn’t too much of a challenge, but it was pretty good – it wasn’t too easy either. It’s just like refreshing my memory on what I have learned in the past. Some new concepts are kind of challenging but I always think that’s a good thing to learn, especially before I start medical school. I’d rather get the question wrong on HMX than on the actual exam in medical school or my USMLE.

Did you find the assessments to be a helpful way for you to learn the concepts?

I think that is the best way to learn. You know, when you go to class you don’t get quizzed or tested until a couple weeks after, and you kind of forget about it already. So being quizzed right after each concept that you learn it actually makes sure that you understand. And if you don’t understand, you can just go back and re-watch it before you move on and you get the question correct which means that ok, you understand this point now and are ready to move on.

Would you recommend HMX courses to other aspiring medical students?

Yes, I actually recommended it to a few of my friends already. I think it’s an advantage if you find out about this before you even take the MCAT. These subjects are mostly major subjects that are being tested on the MCAT…I was thinking if I took this class before I took the MCAT I might have done so much better because the information that you guys are teaching is very in-depth and very detailed. So I recommended it to many of my friends that graduated at the same time with me, because most of them are also trying to get into medical school right now and many of them are doing gap year or waiting for school. I said, ‘why not improve your application by taking some of these courses?’.
