HMX Courses

Physiology, Immunology

As an early childhood education professional with a master’s in psychology, Stephanie Tuttle has helped children with a range of needs and developmental disabilities. Through that work, she developed a desire to be more “hands on” in addressing these issues —  prompting a career change. Now studying part-time in a post-bac pre-med program at Northeastern University, Tuttle took HMX courses as a way to improve her science background as she prepares for medical school.

What was your experience with HMX courses?

I definitely enjoyed it…[I liked when] the professors were talking and kind of writing on a whiteboard at the same time, and relating everything back to a real-life experience was really helpful in making things more interesting and just more real. And the quizzes after each video would follow up and ask either questions on that material or questions that made you think further. The interactives in the immunology course were really helpful too.

My master’s program was all online, and I didn’t really love that, but if it was set up more in a way like this I think I would’ve enjoyed it more where it’s not just reading but actually watching videos and answering questions directly related to the videos.

Had you studied physiology and immunology before?

I’m in an anatomy and physiology class now, and [HMX Physiology] really helped me prepare for this class. I hadn’t done anything with immunology, but it’s really helping me now because I’m signing on to a project that’s doing research for genetic linkage and fighting diseases.

Did you feel like the level of material was appropriate for you?

I was happy that it was challenging. I didn’t want it to be something that I just checked off, but actually something that I benefited from, which I do feel like I did.

How will you use the course material in your studies?

All the notes that I took from the physiology course are in the notebook that I’m using for class now and I do reference it to connect the dots from things in class to things that I remember from the course online.

Would you take an HMX course again?

I’m excited to take more, for sure. I saw that there is a course in biochemistry now, so I plan to take that when I take biochemistry on campus at Northeastern, because I think it will really help solidify everything. I know biochemistry is a really large portion of the MCAT, so I really want to master that.
