HMX Courses

Physiology, Immunology

Meghan Bussiere has had plenty of exposure to medicine in practice, through a student internship at Massachusetts General Hospital and working as an EMT. But until she took HMX courses as a senior in high school, she hadn’t yet studied many of the concepts behind the work. After earning certificates in HMX Physiology and Immunology, Bussiere is currently taking HMX Biochemistry as she prepares for her freshman year at McGill University, where she’ll be applying her learning immediately as a physiology major.

What appealed to you about HMX courses?

I liked the idea that it was kind of on your own time online. That was helpful especially when you have other stuff going on. I hadn’t really been exposed to [immunology or physiology], so I think it will be helpful to have a baseline idea going into undergrad.

What did you find most useful or unique about the courses?

I definitely think the application videos where they took the class into scenarios where everything was actually applied was really helpful. It really tied everything together. I thought the dialysis unit was interesting – we had done some experiments in AP Bio that briefly talked about that, so it was interesting to expand off of something I kind of knew about, but go more in depth.

How did you find the level of material in the courses?

I definitely think it was challenging but it also wasn’t too challenging. I was able to understand everything. The way it was presented – multiple times in different ways – definitely made it easier to understand.

Has your experience in HMX had any impact on your future plans?

I think it has solidified that [medicine] is what I want to do even more. I definitely enjoy learning about these types of things, so that was helpful to reinforce.
