HMX Courses
“I love people and I love studying the human body,” says Kathryn Brewster, who plans to combine her altruistic and scientific interests into a career in medicine. After completing most of the upper-level science courses at her high school, Brewster wanted more. “I wanted to find something that would ‘quench my thirst’ for medical knowledge,” she says. HMX courses were the logical next step.
What appealed to you about HMX specifically? What were you hoping to get out of it?
I was intrigued by the concept videos. I am a visual learner, and the concept videos that I had seen in the trailer sparked my interest right away. I have taken online courses before, and I had always been unsuccessful with the boring style of teaching that comes with them. With HMX, I knew I wouldn’t be mindlessly completing modules, but rather engaging in the content through the videos. When considering HMX, I was hoping to obtain some foundational medical knowledge before I went off to college.
What was your experience taking HMX courses? What did you find most useful or interesting?
My experience with the HMX courses was amazing and truly worthwhile. I miss taking the courses, in fact. All of my expectations were both met and exceeded! The most useful tool was definitely the lesson notepad that corresponded with each concept video. I felt as though the vocabulary words and questions on the lesson notepad truly pushed me to retain the most important information from each video, thus allowing for better understanding of the concept as a whole. With HMX, I didn’t feel like I was getting lost in the details of the lesson, but rather understanding the big picture.
Has your experience in HMX had any impact on what you’ve done since?
My experience with HMX has had a tremendous impact on both my performance in high school science courses and my understanding of the human body as a whole. I feel that my experience with the courses that I took has given me a beneficial head start to my path in pursuing medicine and the foundation I need to succeed in the future.
I am extremely passionate about medicine and healthcare, and I am planning to become a physician one day. Taking an HMX course definitely confirmed this passion, and helped me become more confident in my chosen career path.
