Genetics

Fabiola Gutierrez was attracted to medicine because of the opportunity to constantly learn new things. She does that every day as a pre-nursing student at Colorado Mesa University and while working as a certified nursing assistant; she saw HMX Genetics as a chance to explore a topic she hadn’t previously studied. Fabiola shares how the course helped solidify her plans for a nursing career.

What got you interested in medicine?

My interest in the medical field in general started in the seventh grade when we started talking about cells, and meiosis in particular. I have several family members who are actually in the medical field; a couple of them are OB/GYNs, so that always sparked an interest in me. I always had those questions about why do things happen, how do they happen, so I figured this was a good place to constantly learn new things. Medicine is always evolving.

How challenging did you find the course?

It was pretty challenging. I think what really helped me get through it was the quizzes [after each lesson] – it just really helped reinforce what we had discussed in the videos and in the readings, and it also helped tie together previous materials and current materials.

Were there other parts of the course that you found particularly helpful?

The videos – I would turn on the subtitles – helped me visualize and put things together in my mind. The lesson notepads were also pretty helpful to keep track of important concepts and definitions.

Did you find the format of the course worked for you?

I really enjoyed having the opportunity to do things when I had the time to do it, and I really liked the way the material was taught, I thought it was highly effective. The videos and the quizzes afterward really helped me identify what was going on throughout the course, understand all that information, and retain it.

How did the course impact what you plan to do next?

I feel like I still definitely want to go into nursing. I recall having a lesson on cancer, and working in the oncology unit, it kind of just made me think about going into oncology nursing. I was thinking of doing maybe NICU or pediatrics, but it definitely changed my opinion to looking into oncology instead.

Who do you think these courses are right for?

I feel like these are appropriate for anyone with interest in the medical field, or just science in general. For me it just kind of helped explore different areas of science and it actually just really helped solidify the idea that yes, I do want to go into the medical field and science is what keeps me interested and keeps me going with school. I feel like they’re great courses. They definitely help you learn a lot; the way that they’re structured is great.
