Deja Bullock had a lot going on during her senior year at LaSalle University. In addition to keeping up with her courses and playing on the school’s Division I basketball team, she was working part-time and studying for the GRE. Yet she still found time to learn with HMX, mainly during long bus trips to basketball games. “I really liked that it was online and at your own pace,” says the recent graduate, who plans to take additional courses to “stay in the medical groove” as she completes a master’s program in business in Ireland and prepares to apply to PA schools.

What got you interested in medicine, and what are your career goals?

I always enjoyed science growing up, especially learning about human anatomy. I also am a people person, so I’m not someone who’s had a hard time talking to strangers or adapting in new situations. And I really enjoy helping people. As I got older I realized that I could combine the two things I love and that I’m good at in one career. So my goal is to become a PA.

Did you have a background in immunology or physiology before taking HMX courses?

Not really, because the bio courses I had taken at school were really about structure and functions, and genetics. Some of the concepts I saw [in HMX courses] I kind of recognized, but for the most part, no. In the course I was asked ‘What was your knowledge before this lesson and after?’ and I always started at the lowest level – but by the end, I had a really good grasp on it.

What stood out to you about HMX courses?

I really enjoyed the quizzes at the end of the different concept videos because they actually made me think, ‘Do you really understand this? Yes, you just watched this video, but do you actually understand what was happening?’ And then if I didn’t, I would just go back and rewatch the video until I actually got it.

What I enjoyed the most were the animations and the real-life scenarios. I’m the type of person where if a concept starts to seem a little too hard, I’m thinking, when am I going to use this in real life? When does this possibly come into play? But these real-life scenarios showed exactly where they come into play. So I really liked that, because it really put things into perspective.
