Immunology

Bibhuti Adhikari recently graduated from Kathmandu Medical College in Nepal, and is currently doing her internship while planning to pursue a career in general medicine. She took HMX Immunology to build her knowledge of a topic that had given her difficulty in the past.

Why were you interested in taking an immunology course?

When I was in my med school, immunology is under our basic subjects, and I found it was one of my poorest subjects. I could not excel in it. I needed some guidance on how to improve my knowledge in immunology…After going through the HMX course, I felt that the basic knowledge I was lacking in my med school was finally over.

How did HMX Immunology help you learn?

It started with how immunology works – what is immunology and what are the basic concepts, and proceeds like that. It started with basic concepts which is what I was lacking. And also there were many quizzes in between, so it motivates you to actually concentrate on the subject matter, which helped me a lot.

Did you find the clinical applications useful?

They were definitely very helpful…when we treat patients in the hospital, we teach our patients about how a disease happened, basic concepts. [The disease linkages] helped clear things up for me in clinical work.

Was it a challenge to balance HMX study with your other responsibilities?

I used to have 36-hour duties some days in the hospital, and then I had these courses that I had to finish in a week, so it was a busy schedule, but HMX works according to your schedule. There were videos, and I used to watch them whenever I had free time. I don’t feel there’s any such thing as managing time when you want to learn something. HMX balanced with my schedule; it helped to sit and learn whenever I was free.

Did you find the lesson notepads helpful?

Yes, I still have [them] and it’s very helpful, since I’m preparing for my steps exam for residency programs. We have to study immunology there. Most people say immunology is one of the toughest parts of the exam, and what I like to say is, not for me!
